Terry Koivisto
turned to Woodcarving/Woodworking as a profession in 1975. During 1977, he studied with a more serious and dedicated approach
to carving, learning as much knowledge about lettering styles, finishing techniques and design in the native woods of Northwestern
Ontario, such as Birch, White Pine, Black Ash, with his preference being, Cedar. Self-taught, he carves for Quality, not Quantity
and claims his carvings to be both unique and original, Not a Made in China or a Wal-Mart purchase item.. During the 1980's and throughout the 1990's, he built and designed
Post & Beam Cedar cottages along the shorelines of Lake Superior and throughout Northwestern Ontario, adding his carved
appearance to enhance the characteristics of the buildings in a natural setting... In 2010, his creativeness took him to carving and etching in stone, preferably with Slate. From
the beaches of Florida to the mountains of Alaska, from the coastlines of the Pacific to the Atlantic, his Solar/Sun Burnings
in Wood (done with a Magnifying Glass and the natural rays of the Sun) are truly a one-of-a-kind creation... He was born and raised a 'Northerner' in Port Arthur, Ontario (now
Thunder Bay). In 1975, he build his cottage and studio/workshop @ Pebbly Beach in Shuniah Township, along the shoreline
of Lake Superior, on the same property his Grandfather had 'squatted' in 1929. He enjoys his time spent there, bigtime, along
with his lady, Bevan, daughters Marla and Terra, and his grandchildren, Carver, Matti, Leah and Brady Jack, marking 5 generations
of Family @ Pebbly. He enjoys the people and culture
of N.W.Ontario, especially what Mother Nature has to provide and offer to ALL who live and visit there. He appreciates the
great outdoors, especially the winter snow to which he spends many hours X-C Skiing the Northern Interior and the frozen waters
of Lake Superior. In the summer months, before his retirement in 2005, he would pitch at competitive horseshoes tournaments
throughout Canada and the U.S.A. and participating in 5 World Horsehoe Pitching Championships. In July 1997, he claimed the
title of World Class Champion in Kitchener, Ontario, and in November 1998, he was inducted into the Ontario Horseshoe Hall
of Fame in Wellsley, Ontario as both a Promoter & Pitcher...
Semi-retired, his travels have taken him to Land's End, as far North, South, East & West of North America a vehicle
can drive, to explore and experience the different cultures of people. He doesn't like to be labeled an Artist, but considers
himself as a ' Creative Individual ' expressing himself
through the Natural Woods of what Nature has to offer. Through this inspiration, plus his Woodcarvings &/ Solar Sun Burnings he
tries to bring out the beauty and creativity in people, helping them to realize that........ " WOOD is WONDERFUL"
